Opposition raises doubt on EVMs, demands return of ballot paper

New Delhi : The Opposition on Sunday raised doubts on the EVM machines and demanded return of the ballot paper system in the election. Addressing a press conference, Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu said that with change is technology, the EVM machines have not evolved.

Increasing weight on their demands, the opposition leader also quoted examples of developed countries which prefer ballot paper system instead of EVM machines.

“Paper trail is indispensable for EVMs. The confidence of the voter can only be restored through paper trail machines,” he said.

Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, Congress leaders Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Singhvi were among those who attended the opposition meet in New Delhi on Sunday. 

“There is a long list the parties have given to the Election Commission. It has become even more necessary to count at least 50% of the paper trail of VVPAT. We will demand the same in Supreme Court,” Singhvi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

There were some reports which claimed malfunctioning EVMs have been used during the polling in Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh went to polls for the 175-member state Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats on Thursday. The ruling TDP fought an intense battle with main opposition YSR Congress.
