New Delhi : Researchers at the University of Glasgow have developed a robotic hand with solar-powered skin that is more gentle and sensitive than a real human hand.

This is first-of-its-kind sensor that will enable scientists to give robots more human like look and feel. 

Professor Ravinder Dahiya, an electrical engineer at the University of Glasgow, has created the skin with the help of a single atomic layer of graphene and needs 20 nanowatts of power per square centimeter to operate.

Professor Dhaiya turned to sun and used its energy to power his touch sensor skin.

“Whatever light is available, 98 percent is going and hitting the solar cell,” he says, explaining that a solar panel is located just under the surface of the clear graphene skin. “it is generating power that can be used to get the sensitivity, the tactile feeling.”
