Anju Bobby George may get silver medal for 2004 Summer Olympics

New Delhi : India’s ace athlete Anju Bobby George could add to the Olympic medal tally with a silver. Yes, its true there are speculations, during the Summer 2004 Games in which she finished fifth might get the second place.

Earlier, all the three athletes of Russia who won the gold, sliver and bronze failed the dope test.  

Australian Bronwyn Thompson, India’s Anju George and Britain’s Jade Johnson finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the women’s long jump at the Athens Games behind Russians Tatyana Lebedeva, Irina Meleshina (nee Simagina) and Tatyana Kotova.

All the three failed dope tests in subsequent years and, earlier this year, Lebedeva — who went on to become a Senator in Russia — was stripped of the long jump and triple jump silver medals she won at the 2008 Olympics after she tested positive for the steroid turinabol in a reanalysis of her Beijing sample.

The three Russians had not tested positive in 2004, and with the 10-year time-limit for preserving samples long past, their samples have also been destroyed. But that has not put off Anju and the other two.

Anju suggested that there had been a massive cover-up earlier that had denied them the medals.

Bobby said the Central Government and the national body AFI has assured them of their support.
