New Delhi : Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi needs no introduction for his immense contribution in giving India its much-needed freedom in 1947. From Dandi march to Quit India movement all he needed was his positive thoughts and a stick to ensure Britishers move out from his country.

We often refer him as Mahatma Gandhi. But, why do we call him a Mahatma? For his great contribution to freedom or because he started some impossible movements to unite the nation? Well, on his 147th birth anniversary, we tell you why and how he got Mahatma tag onto his name.

Many must be knowing the reason but for those who are still scratching their heads, one of the greatest Indian poets and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore gave him this title. He often used to refer Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi as Mahatma Gandhi in his letters and poems.

Mahatma means "Great Soul" and the way he lived his life, Rabindranath Tagore credited him this title and world appreciated it.

Gandhi inspired millions of Indians as a living example of his ascetic life in simplicity, kindness and love.
