Illiteracy to vanish from India in next five years: Javadekar

New Delhi : Illiteracy will be eradicated from India within next five years, says Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar. In a bid to achieve this, students from class 6th to 12th will be roped in and will be trained to teach their parents at home.

“In five years, there will be no illiteracy in India. When we got freedom, our literacy rate was just 18 per cent. It is close to 80 per cent today and with the introduction of a noble concept, there will be no illiteracy in the country in the next five years,” said Javadekar.

The statement came from Javadekar at the inaugural ceremony of the ‘Festival of Education’. 

While claiming involvement of youngsters for better education in India, he also wished of making the learning enjoyable in the country.

Currently, the state-run schools follow a no-retention policy and promote all the students up to class 8.
