Thiruvananthapuram : In an unbelievable stint, an ambulance in Kerala covered a distance of 516 kms in record 7 hours at an avg speed of 76.4 kms per hour to save a life of a baby.

A month old baby was to be transported from the northern city of Kannur and Kerala's capital, Thiruvananthapuram for an urgent heart transplant surgery; the ambulance raced the distance in a record time.

According to Google Maps, the total time of traveling the same distance remains 13 hours with light traffic and Kerala's narrow roads. In reality, it normally takes 14 hours to cover that distance.

The ambulance, however, completed the journey in 7 hours. Discounting the 15-minute break the emergency vehicle and its convoy took, the running trip time came to 6 hours and 45 minutes. That is an average speed of 76.4 kmph.

The ambulance was driven by Thamim, who agreed to transport 31-day-old infant Fathima Labia fastest time possible.

She couldn't be air-lifted as the nearest airports (Mangalore or Calicut) were three hours away, while arranging an air ambulance would require at least five hours. So, it was decided, the baby would be transported from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram by road.

With the active support of Kerala Police, the ambulance managed to cover the distance in a record time.
