NITI Ayog member says masks in India will remain till this year
New Delhi : India is vaccinating its citizens at an unprecedented speed; more than 75 crore doses have been given to the people till the time of filing this report. And with this many are eager to know when will they be allowed to ditch the masks?
Niti Ayog member Dr V K Paul has answered the query and said, ‘We will continue to wear the mask till 2022.’ He added that India is passing through the phase where chances of battling the third wave of coronavirus are very high and for this people need to follow COVID appropriate behavior in public places.
Stating that the third wave of virus cannot be ruled out, Paul told NDTV that if people lower their guard this festive season, it could lead to a total mess. On being asked if restrictions should be imposed if a situation arises, he said, “There are ways to ward off the virus, in theory, in such a situation. And there are guidelines that are available to invoke restrictions in a graded manner. And they should be invoked when the time comes.”
Earlier last month, the Central government had also issued an advisory to the states and Union Territories asking them to ensure no large gatherings happen during the festivities.
“It is important to identify warning signs of potential surges early on and to take appropriate measures to curb the spread. This would require a localised approach, as has been mentioned in Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) advisories dated April 25 and June 28,” Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla had said, extending the COVID-19 guidelines till September 30.
On Tuesday, India registered around 25 thousand new cases of coronavirus.
