PHFI introduces cardio-diabetes courses for KMC doctors

Kolkata : The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) has come up with cardio-diabetes courses for civic body’s doctors who monitor diabetes patients. Special training is being provided to the physicians working for Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to help them treat and manage diabetes patients in an efficient manner. Experts from Kolkata Diabetes and Endocrinology Forum (KDEF) and Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) are helping the civic body's doctors with cardio-diabetes courses.

Official record estimated the prevalence rate of diabetes in cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai.  As per data, 11.7% people in Kolkata suffer diabetes, while the percentage of diabetics in Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai are 11.6%, 12.4% and 13.4% respectively.

"The aim is to empower KMC doctors with evidence-based treatment, so that poor patients who visit clinics run by the civic body get better treatment and care," said , KDEF president Dr Tirthankar Chaudhury.

KMC runs 144 health units across the Kolkata city. Apart from communicable diseases, these clinics have facilities to detect and treat non-communicable diseases. "The training will be in phases. Thirty-two doctors have been trained in diabetes treatment and management in the first phase. The next phase will have 24 doctors attending," said Atin Ghosh, MMiC (health), KMC.
