Russian spacecraft carrying a trio of astronauts reach ISS

New Delhi : Russian spacecraft carrying a trio of astronauts from Russia, the United States and the European Space Agency blasted off on for a mission to the International Space Station. The carrier was taken off on Wednesday (June 6) and has successfully entered a designated orbit. It will set itself to dock at the space outpost today, i.e, June 8.

Astronauts who took the trip include Serena Aunon-Chancellor of NASA, Sergey Prokopyev of Russian space agency Roscosmos and the ESA's Alexander Gerst, from Germany. They lifted off as scheduled from the Russia-leased Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan atop a Soyuz booster rocket at 16:12 (local time) on Wednesday.

The ship, Soyuz MS-09 has made entry into a designated orbit and will set its position in the dock at the space outpost on June 8.

The three astronauts will join Drew Feustel and Ricky Arnold of NASA and Oleg Artemyev of Roscosmos, who are currently on the station. Their mission is to conduct 250 experiments in fields such as biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology.

Roscosmos said its chief Dmitry Rogozin met at Baikonur with US Ambassador to Russia, Jon Huntsman, who attended the launch. Talking to reporter, the agency said that the continuing cooperation in space could help repair the strained relationship between the US and Russia.
