Vasco da Gama-Patna express train derails: 10 deadliest rail accidents in last decade
New Delhi : At least 3 people have lost their lives and several others are injured in the Vasco Da Gama-Patna Express derailment near Manikpur Railway station in Uttar Pradesh.
As per initial reports, a fractured railway track has been blamed for the accident. However, railway authorities are yet to make an official comment while helpline numbers, and rescue and relief operations are underway.
This is not the first time a train accident has occurred due to poor maintenance and bad infrastructure; here are some of the deadliest train accidents reported in last decade.
August 19, 2017: Kalinga Utkal Express was derailed in Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 23 people and injuring over 150 as its 14 coaches went off the track.
January 22, 2017: Nearly 30 people were killed and over 50 were injured after seven coaches of Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Express derailed in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh.
November 20, 2016: Over 140 people were killed and more than 200 were injured when 14 coaches of the Indore-Patna Express train derailed in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh.
March 20, 2015: Dehradun-Varanasi Janata Express derailed near Bachhrawan in Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 38 people and injuring over 150.
May 26, 2014: Gorakhdham Express came on the same track of a freight train and rammed into it near Khalilabad station in Sant Kabir Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh. 22 people were killed and over 50 were injured in the accident.
May 4, 2014: At least 20 people were killed and about 100 injured when the Diva Junction-Sawantwadi passenger train derailed between Nagothane and Roha stations in Maharashtra’s Raigad district.
December 28, 2013: Fire inside Bangalore-Nanded Express train killed nearly 54 passengers in the B1 AC coach.
June 30, 2012: Thirty-five passengers were burnt to death and at least 25 injured when a coach of the New Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express caught fire near Nellore in Andhra Pradesh.
May 28, 2010: 148 people died in the Gyaneshwari Express train disaster in May 2010.
The list of train accidents is growing with every passing year and Railway authorities have been finding it difficult to face the issue.
