Women will be allowed to enter in inner sanctum of Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai

Mumbai : The Haji Ali Dargah Trust on Monday told Supreme Court that women will be allowed to enter in the inner sanctum on par with men, asking four weeks’ time to imply infrastructural changes in the premises.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice T. S. Thakur and Justices D Y Chandrachud and L Nageswara Rao gave the trust four weeks of time and also quashed its appeal against the Bombay High Court order asking women to give equal access in Haji Ali Dargah like men.

On the trust’s behalf, Senior advocate Gopal Subramanium told judges that an affidavit has been filed ensuring that the women will be allowed to enter in the inner sanctum of Haji Ali Dargah.

The apex court, on October 17, had extended the stay granted by Bombay High Court to facilitate an appeal against its decision to lift the ban on entry of women near the sanctum sanctorum of the Dargah in Mumbai.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had expressed hope that the Trust, which had challenged the high court judgement, “will take a stand which is progressive”.
