Washington : A speeding car on Thursday plowed into a crowd of pedestrians in Times Square in New York, killing one person and leaving over 20 injured in the incident.

There are no signs of terrorism, claims the authorities.

The driver of a maroon Honda car has been identified as as 26-year-old Richard Rojas, U.S. Navy sailor.

The cops have taken the driver under custody and it has also been learned that he was arrested twice for drunken driving in 2008 and 2015.

"One male in custody in the #TimesSquare vehicle collision. It is believed to be an isolated incident, it remains under investigation," he NYPD said in a tweet. 

Witnesses claimed that the driver was heading against traffic before mounting the pavement. More information was awaited.

Police sealed off the area and buildings were in lockdown. People were being forced away from the scene.
