Chennai : The electric two-wheeler segment in India has garnered significantly more attention than initially anticipated, with new original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) entering the space to tap into its growing potential. According to reports, Vietnamese automaker VinFast is set to enter the segment, aiming to establish a presence in the high-growth electric scooter market.

VinFast has already set up a manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu and is currently selling electric cars in India. The company is now looking to expand its footprint by becoming a major player in the country’s electric two-wheeler segment.

In terms of launch timeline, VinFast’s electric scooters are expected to enter the Indian market in the second half of 2026. The festive season could provide an opportune window for the company to make a strong impact among Indian buyers. VinFast already has multiple electric scooter models in its global portfolio, which could be adapted for the Indian market.

Speaking about the strategy, VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau said the company is focused on developing products specifically tailored for India, taking into account local conditions. These include infrastructure readiness, usage patterns, price sensitivity, and competition. Such localization is expected to help VinFast reduce costs and position its products at competitive price points.

Currently, VinFast operates a dedicated electric car manufacturing line at its Thoothukudi plant in Tamil Nadu. Models such as the VF6 and VF7 SUVs, along with the upcoming Limo Green electric MPV, are produced at this facility. The electric car assembly line is being scaled up to reach an annual capacity of 150,000 units.

At the same facility, VinFast is also planning a dedicated two-wheeler manufacturing line with a projected annual capacity of around one million units. The first India-specific VinFast electric scooters are expected to roll out sometime in the second half of 2026. Key rivals in the segment are likely to include the Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, Ather Energy, and other established players.
