Compare and contrast: Why you should know about Made-in-India Hyundai IONIQ 5 EV vs Kia EV6 (Image: ioniq5.hyundai.co.in)

Delhi : On the opening day of the Auto Expo 2023, Hyundai introduced the IONIQ 5 EV to the Indian market, marking its entry into the market for high-end electric vehicles. For those who are unaware, the Kia EV6 that was introduced in the nation last year and the IONIQ 5 both share the same E-GMP dedicated battery vehicle platform.

The new Hyundai IONIQ 5 is made in India, but the Kia EV6 will be one of its biggest competitors. To help you decide which one offers better value for your money, here is a comparison between the two EVs.

Aspects and size

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has a wheelbase that is 3000 mm long, dimensions of 4635 mm by 1890 mm by 1625 mm (without the shark-fin antenna), and height of 1625 mm. This indicates that while the Kia EV6 is 60 mm longer, it is 75 mm taller and has a 100 mm longer wheelbase.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 both use a strategy that is specific to their respective brand identities despite sharing a platform. The Kia EV6 has a curvy and sloping design, in contrast to the IONIQ 5, which has a boxy crossover SUV aesthetic.

Power source and range

In India, Hyundai is selling the IONIQ 5 with a single 72.6 kWh battery, which has an ARAI-certified range of 631 km. With a 350 kW DC fast charger, the Hyundai EV can be charged from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes, while a 50 kW DC fast charger can complete the task in just 57 minutes. A 11 kW AC charger, on the other hand, needs 6 hours and 55 minutes to fully charge the battery.

The same 77.4 kWh battery pack powers both the RWD and AWD versions of the Kia EV6, with the former having a claimed range of 708 km (ARAI). The battery can be charged from 10% to 80% using a 350 kW DC fast charger in just 18 minutes as opposed to 73 minutes using a 50 kW charger.

Additionally, both EVs have the V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) feature, which gives them an on-board socket so you can charge your electronic devices wherever you go. While the EV6 only receives an exterior socket, the IONIQ 5 receives both an interior and an exterior socket.

Engine and Performance

The IONIQ 5 for India has a single electric motor setup that is mounted at the back and has rear-wheel drive. 350 Nm of maximum torque and 217 PS of maximum power are produced by this motor. According to the manufacturer, the IONIQ 5 has an electronically limited top speed of 185 kmph after sprinting from 0 to 100 kmph in 7.6 seconds.

The Kia EV6 is available with a single rear-mounted motor that produces 229 PS and 350 Nm of torque or a dual motor setup with all-wheel drive that produces 325 PS and 605 Nm of torque. According to Kia, the AWD EV6 will accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.2 seconds, or nearly 2.5 seconds faster than its front-wheel-drive sibling.

Budget range

Given that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 is built locally in India, as opposed to the Kia EV6, which is a direct import (CBU), the former significantly undercuts its cousin. There is only one fully equipped variant of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 available, and it costs Rs 44.95 lakh. After a price increase earlier this year, the Kia EV6 is now available for between Rs 60.95 lakh and Rs 65.95 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom).
