100-Day Climate Satyagraha Yatra Concludes at Rajghat, Prof. Solanki Pays Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi
New Delhi : The 100-Day Climate Satyagraha Yatra concluded at Rajghat on Thursday, returning to the same place from where Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki began the journey on May 13. Before concluding the Yatra, Prof. Solanki visited Gandhi Smriti and paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
Prof. Solanki covered nearly 6,000 km across 51 cities during the 100-day journey, organising more than 130 programmes and directly engaging with over 14,000 people. He travelled in a specially designed solar-powered bus, which has been his home since he began the Climate Satyagraha.
Speaking at Rajghat, Prof. Solanki said climate awareness has increased, but people still lack clarity about what action they need to take and how urgently they need to act.
“Science can grow, technology can grow and the economy can grow, but the size of the Earth and its resources cannot grow. If the Earth is finite, our needs must also be limited,” Prof. Solanki said.
He said climate action must go beyond tree plantation, solar energy, electric vehicles and technological solutions and also address rising consumption.
During the Yatra, more than 10,000 people pledged not to buy new clothes for one year. The campaign estimates that the pledge could save over 200 million litres of water and prevent around 500,000 kg of CO₂ emissions.
Calling the conclusion a new beginning, Prof. Solanki said, “The Yatra has ended, but the Climate Satyagraha now begins. The Earth is limited, so we must limit our needs.”
Kumar Sachin, Nitish Sharma, Virendra Chouhan and Prakash Ishawe accompanied Prof. Solanki throughout the 100-day journey.
