New Delhi : As Nitish Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha on March 5, 2026, it marked a historic and graceful transition in Indian public life. After serving Bihar as its longest-serving Chief Minister and taking oath a record ten times, Shri Nitish Kumar now moves to the Upper House of Parliament. With this step, he fulfills a rare distinction of having served in all four legislative houses — the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Bihar Legislative Council, Lok Sabha, and now the Rajya Sabha.

Born on March 1, 1951, in Bakhtiarpur in Patna district, Shri Nitish Kumar’s journey reflects dedication, simplicity, and commitment to public service. A graduate in engineering from Bihar College of Engineering (now NIT Patna), he entered politics during the 1970s while actively participating in the historic JP Movement against the Emergency. During this period, he was detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), strengthening his resolve to work for democratic values and social justice.

His political career steadily grew with strong public support. He was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1985 and later served multiple terms in the Lok Sabha from Barh constituency. At the national level, he held important portfolios as Union Minister, including Railways, Agriculture, and Surface Transport. During his tenure as Railway Minister, he introduced several reforms aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and connectivity.

However, it was his leadership in Bihar that created a lasting legacy. When he assumed office as Chief Minister in 2005, Bihar faced serious challenges in governance, infrastructure, and development. Under his leadership, the state witnessed a remarkable transformation guided by the vision of “Nyay ke saath Vikas” and “Sushasan.”

Key contributions of Shri Nitish Kumar’s leadership include:

Restoration of law and order

Focused administrative reforms strengthened policing and governance, helping restore public confidence and ensuring a safer environment for citizens.

Infrastructure development

Major expansion of roads, bridges, and connectivity improved mobility across the state and supported economic growth.

Education and women empowerment

Path-breaking initiatives such as the cycle scheme for girl students and increased representation of women in Panchayati Raj institutions significantly improved female education and participation in governance.

Social welfare initiatives

Several programmes were launched to support the poor, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and backward communities through housing, health services, and social security schemes.

Development-oriented governance

Through consistent policy focus and reforms, Bihar moved steadily toward growth, improved governance, and better human development outcomes.

Shri Nitish Kumar’s calm leadership, strategic political understanding, and commitment to the welfare of Bihar earned him the affectionate title of “Sushasan Babu.” His simple lifestyle and focus on inclusive development have inspired trust across political and social sections.

As he now enters the Rajya Sabha, Shri Nitish Kumar continues his journey of public service at the national level. His experience, wisdom, and vision are expected to contribute meaningfully to national discussions and policymaking.

The people of Bihar and the nation acknowledge his decades of dedicated service and transformative leadership. His legacy will continue to guide Bihar’s progress and inspire future generations.
