New Delhi : Amid rising number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra, several districts have announced severe restrictions to stop spread of COVID-19 infection.

The authorities have announced a lockdown in Maharashtra's Amravati during the upcoming weekend.

"Owing to rising cases, lockdown declared in Amravati District from Saturday 8 pm to Monday 7 am," Shelesh Naval, district collector, Amravati, told ANI.

Since last few days, a spike in the number of coronavirus cases was registered in the West Mumbai. At least 230 people tested positive for novel coronavirus in Amravati on 17 February, according to data released by the official.

Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting with the administration of Amravati, Yavatmal and Akola to discuss the ongoing COVID-19 situation.

"The CM has held a meeting with administrations of Amravati, Yavatmal and Akola, on the COVID-19 situation there. Appropriate decisions to be taken," said Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar.

Restrictions have also been announced in Yavatmal district on Thursday. The authorities have announced that the schools and colleges will remain closed till February 28. Restaurants, function halls to operate&marriage ceremonies to be held with less than 50% capacity of people, the district collector said. Assembly of 5 or more people not allowed, he further added.
