Supreme Court drops Jats from OBC reservation list

  • New Delhi : Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that Jat community cannot be included in the Central list of Other Backward Classes

  • The apex court said Jats are politically organised community and hence have no solid reason to stay in this category

  • It also directed government to recognise emerging socially and educationally backward groups like transgenders

  • After court judgement 27 Jat MPs, led by Union Rural Development Minister Chaudhury Birender Singh, met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley

  • They asked government to challenge the order in a review petition

  • Also threatened to handle the case their way if no solid action is taken from government’s end

  • Judgment will affect the politically significant Jats in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Bharatpur and Dholpur districts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

  • The quota was given by the then ruling UPA government.
