Cherchesov to remain Russian head coach

Moscow : Russia head coach Stanislav Cherchesov will maintain his position, Russian Football Union (RFU) First Vice-President Nikita Simonyan said on Wednesday.

Russia's team, coached by Cherchesov, 54, achieved its best result in years at the recent FIFA World Cup that the country hosted for the first time ever. Russia beat Spain in their round of 16 match and made it into the quarter-finals where they lost to Croatia 3-4 via penalty shootout, reports Tass news agency.

"Cherchesov will surely continue working (with the team). When will a new contract be signed? This is a question for Alayev (the acting president of the RFU)," Simonyan said.

Cherchesov took the helm of the Russian national football team in August 2016. His current contract will expire in August 2018.
