No delay in poll results announcement: Maldives poll body

Male : The Maldives Election Commission said on Thursday that the announcement of official results of the presidential election will not be delayed.

The statement came after defeated President Abdulla Yameen asked the poll body to defer the announcement of the election results.

According to provisional results released earlier this week, joint opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih won Sunday's polls after securing 58.3 per cent of votes.

Elections Commission spokesperson Ahmed Akram told Xinhua news agency that despite some concerns raised by the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), there would be no delay in the declaration of final results.

According to the country's election law, the official results must be announced within seven days of the election.

Elections Commission chief Ahmed Shareef said that though the commission will look into the concerns raised by the PPM, it won't postpone the official results beyond the legally mandated period.
