Rail, road traffic disrupted after Kolkata bridge collapse

Kolkata : Train services and vehicular traffic were thrown out of gear in large swathes of West Bengal's south Kolkata and South 24 Parganas district after a bridge partially gave in at Majerhat here on Tuesday.

Public transport routes were disrupted and overall traffic movement through Diamond Harbour Road in Taratala was suspended following the incident.

"We are stranded here for the last two hours. We don't know how to commute back home," an office goer said at Taratala crossing.

During peak travelling hours in the evening, thousands of commuters were inconvenienced.

Incessant rainfall made matters worse both for the rescue operation team as well as the commuters.

Train movement through Majerhat was also suspended temporarily as a precautionary measure after a signal post on the track was damaged by the debris of the collapsed bridge.

Train services on Budge Budge-Sealdah line may be restored after ensuring the safety in train running, a railway official said.
