Donald Trump evacuated after security breach at correspondents’ dinner
Washington : A shooting incident caused panic at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday evening, leading to the emergency evacuation of Donald Trump, the First Lady, and Vice President JD Vance from the Washington Hilton.
Officials confirmed that the President was safe and not injured. The event, attended by around 2,600 guests including senior government officials, military leaders, and journalists, was immediately cancelled and will be rescheduled.
The incident took place at about 8:36 p.m. EDT when a man tried to enter through a security checkpoint near the main screening area. According to authorities, the suspect ran past barricades and fired at least one shot. Security personnel quickly reacted, and agents were heard shouting “shots fired,” causing guests to take cover under tables.
Agents of the United States Secret Service rushed to protect the President and escorted him off the stage. He briefly stumbled while leaving but was quickly helped to a secure location inside the hotel.
Police identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California. He was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. One officer was hit in his protective vest and is expected to recover fully. The suspect was injured during his arrest and taken to a hospital. Authorities from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Metropolitan Police confirmed he is now in custody and acted alone.
Investigators believe the attack may be politically motivated. Officials, including Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel, said writings linked to the suspect suggest he planned to target government officials.
In a later statement, President Trump praised security forces for their quick response. Muriel Bowser assured residents there is no ongoing threat. Global leaders, including Keir Starmer and Mark Carney, condemned the violence and expressed relief at the President’s safety.
The White House Correspondents' Association said the dinner will be held again within 30 days.
