6.7 magnitude earthquake rocks Russia's Kamchatka peninsula

Moscow : An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale hit Russias Kamchatka peninsula on Wednesday, the local seismological station said. A tsunami alert was also issued.

The quake occurred at a depth of 22.8 km at 7 a.m. and the epicentre was located in an enclave in the Bering Sea, 85 km north of Ust-Kamchatsk, TASS news agency said.

The quake was followed by an aftershock measuring 4.9 after 25 minutes. So far, the quake's impact on the area is unknown, Efe news reported.
