Washington : Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and close ally of former US President Donald Trump, was assassinated on Wednesday in a shocking attack that has sent political shockwaves across the States. 31-year-old was shot in the neck while addressing questions related to mass shootings and gun violence.

According to law enforcement officials, the sniper who carried out attack fired the fatal shot from a high vantage point before fleeing the scene by jumping off the roof. FBI later confirmed the recovery of a "high-powered" rifle in a nearby wooded area, which is now undergoing detailed analysis at the FBI laboratory.

FBI Special Agent Robert Bohls provided further details, revealing that investigators have identified a "person of interest" in connection with the shooting and released two photographs. The images show an individual wearing a cap, sunglasses, and a long-sleeve black shirt. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information that could assist in capturing the suspect.

Two individuals were briefly detained on Wednesday but were later released after authorities determined they were not involved in the crime.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk has drawn bipartisan condemnation across the political spectrum. In response, Donald Trump issued a presidential proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities intensify efforts to track down the suspect responsible for this high-profile assassination.
