Kabul faces blackout as electricity supply in several Afghan cities stopped

Kabul : Electricity supply from Uzbekistan to several parts of Afghanistan has been disrupted due to technical faults, Afghanistan's state power company, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), said on Wednesday.

The development comes at a time when some of the reports have claimed that Afghanistan's electricity body is set to sell the estates of its debtors in a bid to pay nearly USD 62 million worth of power bills to the central Asian countries.

The technical glitch was reported at the northern Afghan province of Baghlan, Sputnik reported citing DABS.

"The technical staff is working to resolve this issue as soon as possible," the statement read.

There were also some reports which said that Kabul may run into darkness due to non-payment of dues of Central Asian electricity suppliers by new Taliban rulers.

Around 80 per cent of the power consumption of Afghanistan is fulfilled via electricity imports from the neighbouring nations like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. 

Since August 15, when Taliban took over Afghanistan, the bills had been pending.
