Delhi : In March of this year, Hyundai Motor India, the South Korean automotive giant's Indian affiliate, unveiled the all-new 2023 Verna. Despite buyer polarisation, it has managed to outperform all other mid-size sedans in the class, including the former segment winner, the Honda City. In addition to the Honda City, the new Verna has outsold the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia, and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.

The Hyundai Verna sold 4,001 units in April 2023, which was much more than its sales total for the same month the previous year. In April 2022, the Hyundai Verna sold just 781 units. The year-on-year increase in Hyundai Verna sales is a stunning 412 percent. Verna has managed to gain a market share of roughly 39.99 percent with this massive sales figure in April of this year. Verna also fared well on a month-to-month basis, with sales totaling 3,755 units last month, representing a 6.55 percent increase over the previous month.

The City, Honda's current flagship sedan in the nation, is the second-best-selling vehicle on the list. The City, which was the sector champion before to the arrival of the new Verna, managed to register a decent sales number of 1,920 units in April 2023. City sales were down by about 320 units in April compared to the same month last year. Honda managed to deliver a total of 2,300 City sedans in April 2023. Overall, the year-on-year decrease was 16.5 percent. The City now controls 19.19% of the market. Furthermore, City sales were down 773 units month on month, after selling 2,693 homes last month in March.

The Slavia, the latest sedan from Czech automaker Skoda, came in third place. The Skoda Slavia sedan found 1,586 new homes in April 2023, although this figure was much lower than the one it posted the previous year in the same month. It dispatched roughly 2,431 units in April of last year, a 34.76 percent decline year on year. This month's market share is estimated to be approximately 15.85 percent. Sales increased by a modest 0.76 percent month over month, with roughly 1,574 units sold last month.

Moving on to the fourth mid-size car on the list, the Volkswagen Virtus, the cousin of the previously mentioned Skoda Slavia, managed to sell 1,481 units in April 2023. The Volkswagen Virtus has no year-on-year growth because it was introduced in June of last year. This month, the VW sedan has a market share of roughly 14.80 percent. The Virtus also had a 17.35 percent decrease on a month-to-month basis, with VW dispatching a total of 1,792 units last year.

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz takes the last position on the list. Surprisingly, the Ciaz has managed a reasonable year-on-year growth rate as well as an exceptional month-on-month growth rate. Maruti Suzuki managed to ship around 1,017 units of this vehicle this month, a 64.26 percent increase over the 597 units shipped previous year. The Ciaz now has a market share of roughly 10.16 percent. On a month-over-month basis, the automobile increased by 239 percent, despite only selling 300 units last month.
