Delhi : Tata Motors recently unveiled the revamped Harrier and Safari SUVs, and a bevy of new options are on the way. As the company expands rapidly in the Indian market, it intends to invest in a new design studio over the next few years.

India has a new design studio

Tata Motors now has three design studios: one in the United Kingdom, one in Italy, and one in India. "We are significantly expanding our portfolio and introducing a lot of new nameplates," said the company's global design chief, Martin Uhlarik, to our sister newspaper Autocar Professional. At the same time, all of our existing products are continually being updated. Our workload is increasing at an exponential rate, and our three current studios are barely keeping up. Expect a significant investment in the next several years to extend our design capabilities through the establishment of a new plant in India."

Tata Motors employs roughly 240 designers throughout its three design studios, with the UK and India (in Pune) studios each employing 100. All of its designers have specific specializations, and the teams also include specialists who map social and technical trends in order to deliver future-ready products. According to the firm, it often hires students from design schools, and interns make up around 40% of its current design staff across the three studios.

Infrastructure that is cutting-edge

For each new design, Tata Motors claims it uses a traditional design strategy of ideation, drawing, digital- and clay-modeling processes, and is combining it with many new technologies such as digital design tools, fast prototyping, and 3D printing for speedy evaluations. Our 'Model Operations' section is outfitted with 3D printers and stereolithography equipment, allowing us to create specific pieces such as grilles and lighting in-house, as well as whole scale models for evaluations, according to Uhlarik.nTata Motors intends to make its new design studio a world-class facility, setting the standard for automotive design centers in India.

In 2023, Tata Motors will have a vehicle and SUV lineup in India

The refreshed Harrier and Safari SUVs will be available for purchase on October 17. Tata Motors also sells the Nexon, Tigor, and Tiago electric vehicles, as well as the Punch subcompact SUV and Altroz luxury hatchback. The firm intends to launch the Curvv SUV in India sometime next year.
