New Delhi : The much-awaited EV car maker Tesla is set for an official entry in the Indian automobile sector with the price reveal of their first Tesla Model Y prices out for India.

The car will come in two variants, the standard rear-wheel drive option with a claimed range of 500 kilometres, priced at close to Rs 60 lakh, and a long range version with a claimed range of 622 kilometres, which would cost close to Rs 70 lakh.

Deliveries for the car are likely to start by the final quarter of 2025.

The first showroom for Tesla will be opened at Mumbai and the car will be available for registration at Delhi, Mumbai and Gurugram.

Considering the road situations in India, the car is not customised to fully self drive capabilities; however, it would be unlocked at a price of Rs 6 lakhs in the future. “The activation and use of these features are dependent on achieving reliability far in excess of human drivers as demonstrated by billions of miles of experience, as well as regulatory approval, which may take longer in some jurisdictions. As these self-driving features evolve, your car will be continuously upgraded through over-the-air software updates,” Tesla said.

It was not an easy ride for the carmaker to enter the Indian domain as they had earlier claimed that the nation charges hefty import taxes. To put things in perspective, same car in the USA costs $ 38,000 (roughly 33 lakhs in India), which means it is being launched in India for almost double price.

Manufacturing the car in local market can significantly reduce the prices, but there is no official information on plans by Tesla to have a manufacturing unit in India in recent future.
