Delhi : The country's vehicle consumers currently have little reason to be optimistic about the year 2023. Leading automakers have planned price increases for all models starting in January 2023. Currently, sources indicate that 17 vehicles made by various automakers might be phased out starting in April 2023. Why? Due to the implementation of a new set of emission standards known as the Real Driving Emission (RDE) rules beginning in April of 2019.

What are RDE norms?

To track the driving emission levels in real-time, Real Driving Emission (RDE) mandates that cars carry an onboard self-diagnostic equipment. To maintain a tight eye on emissions, the gadget will continuously check critical components for compliance with emission requirements, such as the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors.

RDE testing, which monitors pollutants like NOx generated by automobiles in a real-world setting rather than merely a lab, leads to improved compliance. RDE is referred to as Phase 2 of India's BS-VI emission limits, the first phase of which began in 2020.

To monitor the throttle, crankshaft positions, air intake pressure, engine temperature, and the contents of the exhaust emissions (particulate matter, nitrogen oxide, CO2, sulphur, etc.), even the semiconductors utilised by the car will need to be modified. The vehicles will also have fuel injectors that have been programmed to control how much fuel is burned.

It will be necessary for automakers to modify their engines, which can be more expensive than the current ones. These new pollution standards will have the most impact on diesel vehicles. In order to comply with the new regulations, firms are reportedly seeking to stop producing some models.
