Amazon set to sack hundreds of people in India, cut down operations

New Delhi : The US giant Amazon has decided to cut down some of its operations in India, resulting in cutting down of the staff. According to a media report, hundreds of the employees in India will be sacked from their roles as the company has decided to focus on its core business i.e. retail online selling in India.

While it is common for a company to shut down some of its businesses, but the sudden move of a company like Amazon from India, which is among the fastest growing e-commerce markets, shows difficulties the company was facing during the operation amid competition with homegrown conglomerates Reliance Industries Ltd. and Tata Group as well as Walmart Inc.’s Flipkart.

A couple of weeks ago, the company had said that they will be cutting down the operations in business related to bulk delivery of consumer goods to the small businesses.

The company has a command and an edge in India when it comes to retail business, but it has claimed that when it comes to food deliveries, they have struggled in India. Meanwhile, a report has claimed that the company will also be shutting down its many beta testing projects in the nation.

Amazon launched Amazon Food, the meal delivery service it’s now shuttering, in India in 2020. It offers food from restaurants and other providers serving everything from paratha, stuffed bread to McDonald’s burgers and fries.

Amazon has also announced that its Amazon Academy learning platform, which offers online test prep resources for students competing to enter India’s medical and engineering schools, will shut down in the coming months.

Globally, the company has announced to cut down around 10,000 jobs.
