AIIMS PhD student attempts suicide, alleges mental harassment
New Delhi : A 36-year-old Ph.D. student from the Microbiology Department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) attempted suicide, alleging mental harassment by the supervisor.
The student tried to kill himself with an overdose of the drugs at his residence in Gautam Nagar. He is currently admitted to the psychiatry ward for counseling.
An instant protest was launched by the other Ph.D. students with demands of suspension and strict action against the accused supervisor.
The police are yet to receive a formal complaint in the matter to initiate any action against the professor.
"The student was admitted to AIIMS after consuming sleeping pills. A preliminary inquiry conducted revealed that the patient is a student of PhD and was feeling harassed by his guide. He had taken sleeping pills. He is stable now but still in AIIMS. No formal complaint has been received so far," Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) said.
The victim student wrote a letter to the authorities and alleged that he was being mentally harassed and humiliated by the supervisor under whom he got registered in August 2013.
AIIMS is yet to take action over the complaint.
