Forensic science is a prominent topic of study that focuses on the application of scientific ideas and concepts to criminal investigations. Forensic Science is broadly classified into three groups: Medical Science, Laboratory Science and Field Science.

As of May 2022, over 4.7 crore cases are pending in courts across different levels of the judiciary. India faces an acute shortage of trained forensic experts and scientists in many Forensic Areas and Crime Investigation. Forensic scientists help to reduce the number of cases entering the overloaded court system. Thus, there is a wide scope for jobs, private work, and own practice in the field.

During their study, forensic science students receive hands-on training and acquire analytical and observational skills such as document verification, handwriting analysis and criminal photography.

Students can go on to pursue careers such as Forensic Experts where will be in charge of gathering evidence, examining crime scenes, and performing autopsies; Forensic Scientist, where they will be required to work at crime sites and gather and evaluate any data that may be utilized as proof to solve a case; Crime Reporter or Journalist for media organizations; and Forensic Psychiatrist, where in addition to dealing with patients, they work with judicial and legal system to provide assistance in criminal cases.

Forensic experts and scientists are often appointed by government intelligence organizations such as  Intelligence Bureau, Central Bureau of Investigation, Government Forensic Laboratory, Income Tax Department, and others, although the job opportunities in commercial agencies have been expanding in recent years.
