CBFC, Election Commission to decide release of PM Modi's biopic

Mumbai : The Bombay High Court on Monday asked CBFC and Election Commission to decide if biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi can be released ahead of Lok Sabha Election 2019. The makers had announced April 5 as a release date for the movie.

Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice N M Jamdar were hearing a plea by Satish Gaikwad, an activist, seeking a stay on the release of the movie and directions to the I&B Ministry to remove the trailer from social media platforms.

CBFC’s counsel Advait Sethna informed the court that the trailer certification was given on March 20, however, the film will be taken up for the examination on Tuesday.

Lawyer Birendra Saraf, representing the film’s producers, told the court that the movie is already in front of the Election Commission and it does not violate any model code of conduct. Biopics are a trend these days and the movie is following the trend.

The bench noted the submissions and said EC has already taken note of the issue and shall deal with it. It also asked CBFC and EC to decide on the release of the movie in accordance with law.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court dismissed the plea seeking a stay on the release of the movie.
