New Delhi : Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed a deep grief over the demise of noted Santoor maestro, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. 

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, "Our cultural world is poorer with the demise of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji. He popularised the Santoor at a global level. His music will continue to enthral the coming generations. I fondly remember my interactions with him. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."

The vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu also expressed his grief on the news. On Twitter, he wrote, "Anguished by the passing away of Santoor Maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji. He was instrumental in bringing Santoor to the centre stage of classical music. His death is a huge loss to the world of music. My heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family members and many admirers."

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was an Indian composer and santoor player from Jammu. The santoor is originally a folk instrument, but became an instrument for Indian classical through his internationally recognized playing style.
