Uttarakhand : A major bus accident took place when the vehicle fell into a 250-metre gorge in Uttarakhand, killing at least sixteen people. The Uttarakhand Transport Corporation bus skidded off the Rishikesh-Gangotri Highway and fell into the gorge near Suryadhar. The rescue operation is underway.

The bus was carrying 25 people onboard when the accident took place. Besides the report of 16 people being killed, several others suffered from severe injuries. Soon after the mishap, the local administration and police rushed to the spot. 

The state government has asked helicopters to be made available to bring the injured to AIIMS. It has also announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each to families of the deceased travellers. The injured people will also be compensated with Rs 50,000. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the accident.

Earlier this month, similar kind of accident killed forty-eight passengers after their bus fell into a 200-metre-deep gorge in Paudi Garhwal district in Uttarakhand. While 45 travellers died on the spot, many people were critically injured and rushed to the hospital. Close to 50 passengers were travelling in the 28-seater bus which was headed for Ramnagar from Bhoan. The reason for the accident is yet to be known, according to police.
