Delhi: Jamia Millia student molested by auto driver, policemen suspended

New Delhi :  A day after a female student of Jamia Millia Islamia was molested by a drunk auto-rickshaw driver, two policemen were suspended on Friday for laxity in the case.

"The girl was molested around 6.30 p.m. on Thursday outside New Delhi Metro station when she was waiting for an auto-rickshaw till Paharganj.

"She called up the police booth and didn't receive a response for around 30 minutes," Parwaiz Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways), told IANS.

"The IO (Investigating Officer) and Duty Officer were suspended today (Friday) for not helping the woman. Inquiry will be held against the two," he said.

A case has been registered against accused Khushrid, aged 50, he said.

Earlier on Friday, the victim took to Twitter and uploaded screenshots of her phone notes, saying "Delhi Police, Shame on you!". She narrated the whole incident.

"...came running after me forcing me to go with him, I refused and kept walking until he came rushing and grabbed my hand..."

She said she turned around and smashed a water bottle on his face. "I slapped him hard and dragged him to the police post..."

She said she dialled the police helpline number but the person who took the call did not attend to her grievance properly and eventually told her that "nobody is going to come".

After struggling to report the crime to police for 45 minutes, the courageous woman grabbed a stick from the police station and started beating up the driver.

"I kept hitting until he started to beg and his arms started to bleed. I really didn't want to stop but sadly the human in me couldn't hurt anyone more..." she wrote.

She said the attitude of police officers made women feel unsafe on the streets of Delhi. "Shame on you Delhi Police. 'Aap aaram kijiye, hum sambhal lenge' (You take rest, we will manage)," she said.
