Mumbai : Close to four people were killed and as many as 16 others suffered injuries when a sudden fire broke out on the 12th storey Crystal Tower building in Mumbai. The unsafe building is located at Hindmata in Parel and the incident took place in the morning light on August 22.

The identified deceased include an elderly woman, Subhadha Shelke who was 62 years old and three other men. Report claims that sixteen people including ten men and six women suffered from suffocation and breathlessness due to to the smoke. The injured were rushed to the nearby KEM hospital, where they are stable now.

Sources confirmed that the fire erupted on the 12th floor of 17-storeyed Crystal Tower building located in Parel. The fire quickly spread to the other upper floors and adjacent flats. It is a posh residential building in Dadar area.

Reports say that 20 fire tenders reached the spot and the rescue team managed to save 20 person in the smoke-spewing residential building which is home to several families.

For now, the situation is under control and cooling operation is under way. "The fire brigade control room got a message at 8.32 am about the blaze on the 12th floor. The smoke from the raging fire spread rapidly, trapping the residents in the stairs", Mumbai Fire Brigade chief PS Rahangdale said.

The fire was confined to electric wiring in electric duct from the 12th floor to 16th floor in lift lobby and common corridor, in shaft and to the electric wiring installation and all flats of 12th floor. 

As per official source, ten fire engines, four water tankers and electric machines were brought to the accident spot.
