New Delhi : An 18-year-old student in Delhi was beaten to death over his alleged relationship with a girl, said police. Five people have been taken in custody in the matter; three out of them are still minor.

Rahul, the 18-year-old who has died, was a resident of west Delhi's Adarsh Nagar. Moments before he was attacked, a CCTV captured Rahul with a girl.

"During investigation, we found that the boy, who was a resident of Jahangirpuri, was friends with a girl and her family was against it. Her brother and other family members thrashed the boy over this and he died due injuries," senior police officer Vijayanta Arya told reporters.

"Rahul was a tuition teacher and he taught students at home. He was a second-year student of Bachelor of Arts. He was attacked by over 8-10 men, and despite attempts to save him by some people around, they continued to thrash him," Rahul's father said.

In a CCTV footage from October 7, Rahul can be seen out on street with a girl. He was called by some people allegedly for tutions and after covering some distance on foot, he was thrashed badly; he died in hospital due to injuries.

The girl's family was against the relationship because the two families are from different communities, according to cops.

The autopsy report mentions severe internal injuries as the reason of death.

Reacting to the 18-year-old's death, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia today said: "The family had come from a village to settle here. The boy used to teach and help others. We will ensure that those responsible get punished as soon as possible."

"The family is traumatised at the moment. We are giving a financial help of ₹ 10 lakh to them. We will make sure that prominent lawyers help them. The family wants justice. We want to set an example so that this doesn't happen with anyone else," he added.
