Patna : Bihar data shows 75,000 unaccounted deaths for undisclosed reasons during the first five months of 2021, which coincided with the deadly second wave of coronavirus. The figure is approximately 10 times the official pandemic death figure.

Recently, Bihar had added 3,951 new deaths in the total tally of coronavirus tally, taking the total to 7,717 for January-May 2021.

However, it looks like a fraction of the excess deaths recorded by its Civil Registration System -- a difference of 74,808 to be precise.

For now, the big question on Bihar is if they have undercounted the total deaths due to COVID 19? After all, Bihar has historically had a poor track record when it comes to registering deaths.

It is the latest state where such possible undercounting is suspected. Similar trends were seen in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Delhi.

In the second wave of coronavirus, several deaths and hospitalizations were recorded across the nation. Shortage of medical resources was among the key reasons behind so many deaths.
