About Atal Bihari Vajpayee - The man who bought BJP to Centre

New Delhi : Indian politician Atal Bihari Vajpayee took his last breath on Thursday morning at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Here is all about Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Mr. Vajpayee served thrice as Indian Prime Minister. First for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of eleven months from 1998 to 1999 and then from 1998 to 2004.

He was a member of Indian Parliament for over four decades, being elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house, ten times, and twice to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee retired completely from politics in 2009 due to health concerns. He was among the founding members of Bharatiya Janata Party which he headed from 1968 to 1972.

He is also India's first Prime Minister from a non- Congress Party to serve a full five-year term. 

Awards and honour:

He was conferred India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by the President of India in 2014. It was declared by the Modi government in 2014 that Vajpayee's birthday, 25 December, would be marked as Good Governance Day.
