Assam rifles women ready to make history in Republic Day 2019
New Delhi : India will celebrate its 70th Republic Day on 26 January 2019. On the auspicious occasion, there will be a impressive parade in national capital New Delhi’s Rajpath. The day recalls the historic moments when Indian constitution was adopted and the country was declared a republic.
While Indian Air Force and Indian Army will exhibit their latest acquisitions, Indian navy will showcase miniaturised replicas of latest surface ships and submarines. But among all these, there will be something very special this year. Mahila Jawans will be participating in the Republic Day parade. They have been recruited on compassionate grounds and are family members of soldiers who died for the nation.
Speaking to media, Rifle Woman Sunita Thapa said she’d taken on the responsibility only so that she’s able to carry forward her late husband’s dream of serving the country. Sunita is the mother of a five-year-old, and her family is with her in this decision. She said: "The entire family is proud of me and I am proud of the Assam Rifles."
Gayatri Sharma, who joined the force a little over a year ago claimed that she was recruited after her father died in 2001. Gayatri lost her father, who was also an Assam Rifles Jawan, when she was only three. She said: "I got a letter from the Assam Rifles to join the force. I will perform my duty with full dedication for my country just like my father. I feel honored to be a part of the Republic Day contingent.”
The all-women contingent in Republic Day Parade 2019 will be led by Major Khusboo Kanwar and has a total of 146 members. Major Kanwar said: "For the first time in history, a women contingent of the para military will be marching on the majestic Rajpath. The women soldiers of the force are no less than their men counterparts!”
South African president Cyril Ramaphosa will be chief guest this year. Indian Airforce will display aircrafts like Sukhoi-30 MKI, Mig 29, Jaguar and Indian Army will showcase T-90 main battle tanks among other things.
India will also show case its cultural heritage and diversity. The main event will see 17 tableaux from states and 6 from the ministries that have been shortlisted under the theme.
