Kolkata : Trinamool Congress MLA and sports minister Laxmi Ratan Shukla has submitted his resignation to the Governor. This comes days after a couple of ministers in Mamata Banerjee's government have resigned to join BJP ahead of Assembly Elections.

"I have received his resignation letter. Laxmi is a good boy and he wants to return to sports. There is no misunderstanding... He will continue as MLA till the election and I have recommended to the governor that his resignation should be accepted," Mamata Banerjee said at an event on Tuesday.

He is an MLA of Howrah (Uttar) constituency. In his letter of resignation, Laxmi mentioned that he wants to quit politics.

He had joined hands with Mamata Banerjee in 2016 and had won the elections then.

BJP remains the biggest competitor for Mamata Banerjee led TMC and interestingly, BJP leader Amit Shah had recently mentioned that "Didi will be left alone by the time of Assembly Elections".

TMC leaders Suvendu Adhikari and his youngest brother have already joined hands with BJP, creating a reason of concern for Mamata Banerjee.

Two other members of the Adhikari family are still Trinamool MPs - Suvendu Adhikari's father Sisir and brother Dibyendul.
