Centre to revise minimum age of girl for marriage: PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that Centre will soon be announcing the minimum age of marriage for girls after it reviews the report submitted by the committee set up for this.

Mr Prime Minister also announced that with effective government measures, this has happened for the first time that the enrolment of girls for education is even higher than that of boys.

"Because of these efforts, for the first time, the gross enrolment ratio of girls in education is more than that of boys," PM Modi said.

PM Modi made these remarks while addressing a video conference after releasing a commemorative coin of Rs 75 denomination on the 75th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

"There is an important deliberation going on to decide what should be the ideal age of marriage for daughters," PM Modi said on the occasion.

In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi had announced that the government was deliberating on what should be the minimum age of marriage for women and has set up a committee to look into the matter.

Currently in India, the minimum age of marriage for girls is 18 years and for boys it is 21 years. He also mentioned that the poor women across the nation are being provided with sanitary pads for Rs 1.
