Conspiracy against CJI: Rich and powerful cannot run top court, says Supreme Court

New Delhi : Supreme Court on Thursday appointed a committee headed by the former judge Justice A K Patnaik to probe sexual assault allegations against CJI Ranjan Gogoi.

The apex court also asked lawyer Utsav Bains, who had claimed conspiracy against the CJI, to provide all evidences and material which support his claim that he was approached by a fixer to frame the CJI.

Earlier today, the apex court had expressed anguish over the "systematic attack" on the judiciary and had said that the rich and powerful cannot run the apex court; they will end up burning their fingers if they play with the fire.

The apex court was hearing allegations made by Bains that there was a larger conspiracy to frame CJI Ranjan Gogoi.

"We will tell them don't dare attempt it. You will burn your fingers", the bench said, adding, "it is 3-5% of lawyers who try to influence the registry whenever there is big case and bring a bad name to the lawyer community as well as judiciary."
