New Delhi : The number of positive coronavirus cases in the national capital took a sharp spike as 193 new cases were registered on Friday and two people dying of it, the government said. The total toll of cases in Delhi now stands at 903 and the number of deaths at 14.

According to the officials, the total number of hotspots identified in the national capital stands at 30; strict lockdown measures are implemented at these hotspots. People are not allowed to move out from their houses strictly under the hotspots.

The new hotspots include areas in Nabi Karim, Zakir Nagar and Chandni Mahal, the officials said.

One of the containment zones - a locality in East Delhi's Dilshad Garden - has become a "coronavirus-free" area following the "Operation SHIELD" protocol of the government, Health Minister Satyendar Jain said. No new cases were reported from the area in the last 10 days.

Announced by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday, SHIELD involves steps like sealing, home quarantine, isolation and tracking, essential supply, local sanitisation and door-to-door checking.




According to the health officials, out of the total cases, 269 of the people who had travelled abroad or were in contact of such people; remaining cases are of the people who were either a part of Jamaat or were in contact of such people.
