Chennai : Tamil Nadu on Sunday took the third spot on the list of states in India with most number of confirmed coronavirus cases. The total number of positive cases has crossed the 7,000-mark, according to the health bulletin released by the state.

The Southern state has registered a sudden spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in last few days. On Sunday, it registered 669 new infections, taking the total toll of the state to 7,204, which is around 600 less than Gujarat and nearly 700 above the national capital.

Nearly 2,000 people have recovered in the state till date.

In Tamil Nadu, capital Chennai remains the worst-hit with 3,839 cases. Shockingly, 509 of 669 new cases came from Chennai itself. The health bulletin mentioned that most of the new patients received coronavirus from their contacts.

Chennai is the nation's fourth worst-hit city after Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad.

India has seen a sudden pace in the number of coronavirus amplification as the toll in now nearing 70,000 mark.
