New Delhi : Droupadi Murmu has become the first tribal woman to serve as India's President; she scored 60 per cent of votes in her favour. She will take oath on July 25, 2022.

After three rounds of voting, she received 64.03% votes of the total value. Her rival Yashwant Sinha received 35.97% of the votes.

Soon after the results were declared, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other NDA leaders visited Droupadi Murmu to extend their wishes.



"Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has been an outstanding MLA and Minister. She had an excellent tenure as Jharkhand Governor. I am certain she will be an outstanding President who will lead from the front and strengthen India's development journey," PM Modi tweeted.



Who is Droupadi Mrumu?

Born on June 20, 1958, Droupadi Murmu is an Indian politician associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. She previously served as the ninth Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. She is from the state of Odisha. She is the first governor of Jharkhand to complete the five-year term.

The leader belongs to Baidaposi village of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha.

Murmu was elected as the councilor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997. She also served as the vice-president of Bharatiya Janata Party's Scheduled Tribes Morcha.

During the Bharatiya Janata Party and Biju Janata Dal coalition government in Odisha, she was the Minister of State with independent charge for Commerce and Transport from March 6, 2000 to August 6, 2002 and Fisheries and Animal Resources Development from August 6, 2002 to May 16, 2004.
