New Delhi : Election Commission on Friday announced the dates for state elections in Tamil Nadu, Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry; the multiple phase elections will begin from March 27 and the results will be out on May 2.

According to the EC, Bengal will vote in eight phases - March 27, April 1, April 6, April 10, April 17, April 22, April 26 and April 29. Tamil Nadu and Kerala will be voting in one round on April 6. Puducherry people will also cast their votes on the same day.

Assam will conclude voting in three phases on March 27, April 1 and April 6.

The model code of conduct is now officially applicable in all the states. More than 18 crore voters are eligible to cast their vote in the upcoming elections.

It must be noted that ever since coronavirus has struck India, this is the first election on such massive scale. To ensure the safety of poll officers, the government will be vaccinating them as the frontline workers.

Polls will be held for 294 seats in West Bengal, 234 seats in Tamil Nadu, 140 seats in Kerala, 126 seats in Assam and 30 seats in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The Election Commission cited fear of violence while defending eight rounds and said: "We had an assessment of law and order on several factors. Last time it was seven phases so eight is not a big deal."

Meanwhile, CM Mamata Banerjee slammed the Centre over poll schedule and said that it appears like PM Modi and Amit Shah have dictated poll dates to the election commission.

"Khela Hobe (Game On)," is the Trinamool's slogan, with the BJP calling for "poriborton (change)".
