Facebook data leak: BJP warns Zuckerberg of strict action, may summon too

New Delhi : Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday warned Mark Zuckerberg of stringent action if Facebook tries to influence India’s electoral process through “undesirable means”. He also asked Congress to explain their connection with Cambridge Analytica (CA) which is accused of attempting to manipulate elections in the United States.

“It is a serious security threat for the country and Congress must answer on this,” Prasad said. He also issued warning to Facebook that a strict action will be taken if they learn any interference from the social channel in wrongly influencing the Indian election process. "Mr Mark Zuckerberg, you better note the observation of the IT minister of India. We welcome FB profile in India, but if any data theft of Indians is done through collusion of FB system, it shall not be tolerated. We have got stringent powers in the IT Act, we shall use them, including summoning you to India," Prasad warned.

The Facebook stocks have been plummeting ever since the news came to light that CA accessed millions of profiles on the social channel to obtain their information and target their campaign in accordance.

Quoting media reports, Prasad alleged that Cambridge Analytica — reported by a section of the media as being considered by Congress to help the 2019 campaign — has been accused of using bribes and sex workers to entrap politicians and steal data from Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg on the other hand has tendered apology on the data leaks and has ensured that he is doing his best to ensure the data remains safe with them.
