FASTag to be made mandatory for all new four wheelers from December 1

New Delhi : The government on Thursday announced mandatory installation of FASTag, a rechargeable card that uses passive radio frequency identification (RFID ) technology to debit toll charges automatically, in all four wheelers sold after December 1.

It will be a duty of manufacturers and authorised dealers to check if the FASTag has been installed in the four wheelers.

“In case of vehicles that are sold as drive-away chassis without windscreen, FASTag will have to be fitted by the vehicle owner before it is registered,” said the Union road transport and highways ministry in a statement.

FASTtag enables users to pass through tolls on highways with less or no hassle. The move aims at cutting long ques at toll booths.

Existing vehicles can buy the tag from designated banks and toll booths and fix them on the windscreen.
